Last time, Super Mario Bros. Wonder received a new Nintendo Direct to showcase a lot of new features. One of those features is the Online Multiplayer feature for the game.

Setting aside Mario Party and the Mario Kart titles, only Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for the Nintendo Switch had an online multiplayer feature as a mainline title for the franchise marking Super Mario Bros. Wonder as the first 2D platformer, mainline title for the franchise to have an online multiplayer feature.

Here are some of the information revealed about the feature during the Nintendo Direct:

Live Player Shadows
Other players show up on the world map and in courses along with you as you are connected online. These players are playing the game in real-time, like you would. Likewise, you may leave a standee so you may be revived by a live player later on and the same goes vice versa. You may also send them greetings and in-game items!

Standees
These are standees that may revive ghosts that are placed in courses. It acts as a soft-checkpoint.

Heart Points
These are statistics of a player to see how much they have helped other players. You may earn Heart Points by reviving other players' ghosts, giving items, or reaching goals together.

Friend Races
In a private lobby, you may play with your friends through this mode. In the same room, you may see what course your friends are currently playing, and allows you to enter levels together as well. Some courses require you to simply reach the goal, grab a Wonder Seed, or defeat a boss. It has to be noted that while private lobbies support up to 12 players, only 4 players may play at the same time.

Online Co-Op
Unfortunately, the game does not support traditional co-op that which you would want to finish the game's campaign with friends online. For that, you would have to ultimately play in a couch co-op. This supports up to 4 players at a time.
